If you thought that the time for cocktails on a cruise ship is over, you’re wrong. The School of Fish Foundation is a nonprofit organization co-founded by Ronald Shannon and Robert Clark, the chief ranges of C Restaurant . Together, they created a floating table seating 12 people, made entirely using 1700 recycled plastic bottles. After paying a whopping $ 215, you’ll get a spot on the cruise and you can sample a tasting menu of 6 courses with an emphasis on seafood, including small and wonders, as a smoked trout salad with marinated beets and toasted almonds, and endive with tiger shrimp served with apple dressing. Food Connect - The SS Delicious Learning

I’ve written quite a lot previously on the dire state of the world’s oceans, the battle for conservancy and sustainability of different fish populations, and how consumers can make a difference.

Turns out it’s not about the media or the public at all. Or, more accurately, we’re only two-thirds of the equation.

This is the basic premise being advanced by the School of Fish Foundation, co-founded by Shannon Ronalds and pioneering chef Robert Clark of C Restaurant. Ronalds believes it is most necessary to teach CHEFS about sustainability, and then have them execute smart choices in their menus, exponentially reaching additional people. Sort of like tackling the narrow end of the funnel, rather than the wide… Read full article »

Shannon Ronalds is in harmony with the ocean. Growing up on Vancouver Island established his foundations of respect and understanding of sea life and accountability in fishing. The passions of his sustainable teachings are matched by his affections for the joy of wine and food. After moving to Vancouver, Shannon pursued education and experience in hospitality – always with a keen eye to our ecosystem. He was part of the opening management of C Restaurant, a dining room that embraced his own beliefs in balance between culinary class and seafood sustainability. His ambition bred opportunity to travel the world of wine, leading to time spent as Sommelier at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverley Hills, California. Shannon’s is a life spent most happily in hospitality, but he also has a message for us, which is unmistakably clear: we need to make responsible choices about our seafood… Read full article »

Around the same time that eco-adventurer David de Rothschild crossed the Pacific on Plastiki, a sailboat made from 12,500 recycled plastic bottles held together with organic cashew glue, CNN turned its cameras from de Rothschild’s arrival in Australia’s Sydney Harbour to our own False Creek Marina. There, for the first time since the Olympics, an international news story was brewing: Shannon Ronalds, CEO and founder of School of Fish Foundation (SOFF), was putting the finishing touches on the world’s first floating dining room, which is buoyed by almost 1,700 pop bottles… Read full article »

Aug 30, 2010   //   by Shannon Ronalds   //   Media Mentions, Vancouver  //  No Comments

We’ve all heard of the Plastiki voyage in which a boat made out of 12,500 plastic bottles sailed from San Francisco to Sydney, but moored at the False Creek Yacht Club in Vancouver, a little raft has also been creating a little splash of its own.

Located near its restaurant partner “C“, this elegant dining room sits on a raft made of 1,700 plastic bottles set in a frame made of reclaimed pinewood. It seats about 12 guests and offers visitors a six-course sustainable seafood meal paired with organic and biodynamic wines. As described by creator, Shannon Ronald, this has all been developed as a way to fundraise for his School of Fish Foundation and its educational aspirations, which includes everything from educating chefs and changing the restaurant business to encouraging schools to collect scientific data from, and work closely with local marine conservation organizations… Read full article »

If a massive crane succeeds in hoisting a raft made of bug-kill pine and 1,700 plastic pop bottles into Vancouver’s False Creek, tonight, 12 dinner guests may have the seafood feast of their lives.

Sustainable seafood, that is.

Open for just 60 nights, the Plastic Dining Room is a floating showcase for the culinary explorations of chef Robert Clark of C Restaurant, who has made a career out of introducing gourmands to the charms of bottom feeders such as abalone, geoduck and octopus… Read full article »

Moored alongside the prestigious False Creek Yacht Club, the Plastic Dining Room – the brainchild of Shannon Ronalds, founder of the School of Fish Foundation – is a floating restaurant that floats on a platform made from 1,700 recycled plastic two-liter bottles. Builder/designer Mike Lid laid the foundation on the assumption, which says that each two-liter bottle displaces 4.4 pounds of water. A wooden structure that encases the plastic bottles keeps them from decaying. The wood framework is made from reclaimed pine wood… Read full article »
